App Spotlight: Sky Guide

This week Im highlighting one of my absolute favorite apps:

Sky Guide (for iPhone)

This app allows you to interact with the sky in a much more versatile way than just looking up at the stars - although I do still fully support just gazing up at the sky on a clear night! 🤩🌌

Some of my favorite features of this app are:

  • mapping out constellations

  • locating other planets in the sky

  • seeing when the ISS is passing overhead

  • tracking "space junk" (lol - surprisingly very entertaining)

  • keeping up with the astral phenomena like comets passing by or meteor showers

It can also utilize your phone's gyroscope (aka: the motion sensor) when being used in "compass" mode - which allows it to move with your phone and show the real data that's in front of wherever you are aiming! As you hold your phone up and point it outward, it creates a stunning visual overlay of the sky in front of you with labels and imagery highlighting exactly what you are looking at!

This app is great at any time of the day if you're curious what's overhead during daylight hours, however it's a phenomenal tool to use on those evening walks or late night explorations!

This specific app is currently only available for iPhone/iPad, however there are several similar alternatives available in the various app stores! If you have a comparable one that you use, please share it with us in the comments below!
